Days at the sanctuary begin early – so grab some coffee or tea, fresh fruit, juice, yogurt, a bagel, cereal or toast, and head out to help feed, give fresh water, distribute meds, clean dog runs, wash dog dishes - and love on the dogs! The same routine happens again in the afternoon, beginning around 4pm.
During the day you can relax, explore the sanctuary, hang out with the dogs, bird watch from the deck, take a road trip to one of the nearby attractions, or if you prefer to keep busy at the sanctuary there is always a special project underway, a mountain of dog laundry to be done, dogs to be bathed, dogs who need to have their photo taken, office work, gardens to be weeded, house work, help needed to prepare for the next airport run, and much more to be done!
When the evening chores are done, “Happy Hour” begins! Enjoy a tropical drink and a snack of guacamole (made from home-grown avocados Sept - November), home-made hummus or other tasty appetizers.
For lunch or dinner, there are a few eateries in town, plus some chain restaurants and two very nice restaurants within a 30 minute drive. Or if you prefer, you may enjoy lunch ($5 per guest) and/or dinner ($10 per guest) at the sanctuary.
In exchange for your commitment to complete at least one chore of your choice each day, you will get accommodations, continental breakfast, snacks, beverages, and Happy Hour! A minimum donation of $69 per night, per room, double occupancy is requested at the time of your reservation. (add $20 for each additional person in room). Donations are non-refundable.
We are equal distance from the three major airports in PR. Transportation to and from the airport can be arranged, the cost varies depending on carrier. Depending on the length of your stay, you may find it more cost effective to rent a car. You will need a car if you want to visit the many nearby attractions, beaches, explore the town, or feed and stray dogs on your own.
The drive from SJU airport to Utuado is about 90 minutes. The route is straightforward and very well signed, and all but the last twenty minutes are highway. The drive from the other two airports is more scenic, and a bit more of an adventure.
